President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe is in South Africa for the 2025 Liberation Movements Summit. This important meeting focuses on protecting Africa’s liberation achievements and promoting regional development. The summit started on July 25 and brings together leaders from Southern African countries to discuss key issues.

The theme of the summit is “Defending the Liberation Gains, Advancing Integrated Socio-Economic Development, Strengthening Solidarity for a Better Africa.” Leaders will talk about improving trade and investment in the region, building better relationships among SADC nations, and finding ways to tackle economic challenges. A senior member of Zimbabwe’s delegation said, “This summit is crucial for our shared vision of prosperity. We need to protect our liberation gains while encouraging growth for everyone.”

The night before the main sessions, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted a dinner at his official residence, Mahlamba Ndlopfu. Key attendees included President Nangolo Mbumba of Namibia and former leaders like Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique. They discussed how to strengthen regional ties and explore new trade opportunities.

While President Mnangagwa is in South Africa, Vice President KCD Mohadi is acting as President, ensuring that governance continues smoothly in Zimbabwe. As the summit moves forward, it is expected to end with a joint statement outlining steps for better cooperation among SADC countries, strategies to boost economic resilience, and initiatives to empower the youth.
