Recent reports have raised serious concerns about Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU-PF, with allegations linking it to organized crime and illicit activities. These claims, brought forward by a high-ranking South African police official, have sparked debate and calls for action within the region.

According to General Nhlanhla Lucky Mkhwanazi, the Provincial Police Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, he has submitted an official report accusing ZANU-PF of operating as an “international criminal organization.” The report alleges that high-ranking members of ZANU-PF, potentially including individuals connected to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s office, are working with senior officials in South Africa’s ruling ANC party. These collaborations are said to facilitate illegal financial flows, illegal mining operations, and even the supply of trained gunmen for political assassinations.

According to General Mkhwanazi, Zimbabwe is allegedly being used as a hub for laundering money from South Africa. The report names prominent Zimbabwean businessmen Wicknell Chivayo and Kudakwashe Tagwirei, both known to be allies of President Mnangagwa, as key figures in these schemes. These individuals are accused of using their connections to move illicit funds and export goods to countries where ZANU-PF officials are under international sanctions.

The report further claims that ZANU-PF is supplying South Africa with “military-trained gunmen” who are involved in political violence, including factional killings within the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal. General Mkhwanazi stated that there is “concrete evidence” that some individuals involved in violent political crimes in the province are trained members of the Zimbabwe National Army.

Mkhwanazi has urged the South African President to confront Zimbabwe’s leadership about these allegations, particularly at upcoming regional summits. He warned that the alleged involvement of ZANU-PF is making it increasingly difficult to combat crime in South Africa.

These revelations are expected to ignite intense debate within the region, especially as both South Africa and Zimbabwe face increasing scrutiny over governance, corruption, and political violence. The allegations raise serious questions about the state of governance and the rule of law in Zimbabwe, as well as the potential impact on regional stability.
