In light of ongoing tensions in the Islamic Republic of Iran, the South African government is urging all citizens currently residing in the country to contact the South African Embassy in Tehran. This initiative is aimed at ensuring that citizens are registered and that their whereabouts are known to the Embassy.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has stressed that South Africa’s support in Iran is limited. Consequently, citizens should be aware that face-to-face consular assistance may not be available in the event of an emergency. A spokesperson emphasized, “Civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be considered legitimate targets,” highlighting the serious implications of the ongoing conflict.

According to IOL News Chrispin Phiri stated, “We extend our deepest condolences to the peoples of both nations suffering from the tragic loss of life,” reinforcing the importance of personal safety during this crisis.

The government has also encouraged individuals to assess their own security conditions and act accordingly.
