Agreement Reached for Edgar Lungu’s Funeral Arrangements

The family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has reached an agreement with the government regarding the return of his remains to Zambia. This resolution follows weeks of negotiations, facilitated by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Catholic Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda, who was previously criticized by the UPND government.

The agreement to bring Lungu’s body back was made possible through the efforts of President Mnangagwa and Archbishop Banda, who has a close relationship with the Lungu family. Despite past tensions, Archbishop Banda played a key role in the negotiations, using his moral standing and connections to help resolve the issue.

Before this agreement, the standoff over the late president’s body had raised public concern. The Lungu family had been hesitant to include the government in funeral arrangements, leading the Zambian government to try various diplomatic approaches to break the deadlock. High-level envoys, including former Vice President Enock Kavindele, were sent to negotiate but returned without success, bringing back mere shopping bags instead of a resolution.

According to a reporter, one source involved in the negotiations remarked, “They went with hope and came back with mobile phones.” This highlighted the difficulties the government faced in reaching an agreement.

The involvement of Archbishop Banda and President Mnangagwa brought a new approach, focusing on spiritual connections and regional solidarity. Their efforts succeeded in ways that political pressure had not, creating a more open atmosphere for compromise.

The family has agreed to return President Lungu’s body to Zambia, allowing the government to participate in the funeral arrangements. However, this comes with strict conditions, including guarantees that there will be no political interference, no partisan exploitation, and a dignified send-off suitable for a former head of state. The family has made it clear that they want a funeral, not a political event.

As of now, the Zambian government has not issued a formal response to these conditions. However, sources at State House indicate that discussions are ongoing, and a mutual agreement may soon be reached.

This agreement reflects a resolution to a sensitive situation and highlights the complexities of political relationships in Zambia. The collaboration of President Mnangagwa and Archbishop Banda shows the potential for diplomacy to bridge divides in difficult times.

The return of Edgar Lungu’s remains to Zambia is an important moment for the nation, emphasizing the need for respect and cooperation in times of grief. As all parties work to honor the late president’s legacy, it is hoped that this experience will lead to better dialogue and understanding in Zambian politics moving forward.
