Zimbabwe Faces Nationwide Blackout Due to Power Grid Failure

Zimbabwe faced a nationwide electricity blackout due to a significant system failure that crippled its power grid. The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) reported that the outage, which occurred yesterday afternoon, resulted from a system disturbance that led to a loss of power generation at both the Kariba and Hwange power stations.

The blackout affected local power generation and disrupted electricity imports from regional suppliers, including South Africa, Zambia, and Mozambique. ZESA confirmed that these interconnections were simultaneously lost due to the system-wide disturbance.

ZESA Holdings issued a statement informing the public of the nationwide power outage and assured them that restoration efforts were underway. The utility reported that power had already been successfully restored to some areas, and teams worked tirelessly to bring the remaining affected areas back online as quickly as possible. ZESA also apologized to its customers for the inconvenience caused by the outage.

Zimbabwe relies on the Kariba Hydro Power Plant and the Hwange Thermal Power Station for its electricity generation. The Kariba plant has a capacity of 1,050 megawatts, while the Hwange station is the largest coal-fired power station in the country. The loss of power generation at these two key facilities had a cascading effect, leading to the nationwide blackout.
