On August 27, 2025, the community of Minneapolis was shattered by a mass shooting at the Annunciation Catholic Church, leaving two children dead and 18 others injured. The shooter, 23-year-old Robin Westman, opened fire on students attending a morning Mass, marking the beginning of a new school year. Westman, armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol, fired over 100 rounds through the church’s stained-glass windows, turning a place of worship into a scene of terror.
Robin Westman, who was identified as the shooter by law enforcement officials, died by suicide at the scene. Westman had previously attended Annunciation Catholic School, and the shooter’s mother had worked at the church. In 2020, Westman legally changed their name from Robert to Robin.
The attack appears to have been premeditated, with evidence suggesting Westman harbored a fascination with mass shootings and a deep-seated hatred towards various groups. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the incident as a deliberate act of violence.
Prior to the shooting, Westman posted videos on YouTube that revealed a disturbing mindset. These videos, since taken down by authorities, displayed weapons and ammunition, along with messages expressing hatred and violence. Some weapons had phrases like “Kill Donald Trump” and racial slurs scrawled on them. The videos also indicated Westman’s admiration for other mass shooters.
In addition to the videos, authorities are examining a manifesto left by Westman, which further explains the shooter’s motives and state of mind. The writings reportedly reveal an obsession with killing children and a desire for notoriety.
The two children killed in the shooting were identified as 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski. Fletcher was remembered by his father as a loving child who enjoyed fishing, cooking, and sports. Harper’s parents described her as a bright, joyful, and deeply loved 10-year-old whose laughter, kindness, and spirit touched everyone who knew her.
In addition to the fatalities, 18 other people were injured in the shooting, including 15 children and three adults in their 80s. The injured victims were rushed to local hospitals, where they received medical treatment.
The Minneapolis community has responded to the tragedy with an outpouring of grief and support. Vigils and prayer services have been held to honor the victims and offer comfort to those affected.
The shooting has also reignited the debate over gun control in the United States. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and other lawmakers are calling for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. They argue that easy access to firearms, especially those meant for mass violence, adds to the problem of gun violence in the country.
The FBI is investigating the shooting as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Catholics. Law enforcement officials are continuing to analyze the evidence, including Westman’s videos and writings, to determine the shooter’s motives and identify any potential accomplices.
The situation at Annunciation Church has deeply affected the Minneapolis community. As investigations continue and people begin to heal, the focus remains on supporting the victims and finding ways to prevent future tragedies.
