Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah, has been apprehended and taken into custody as the suspect in the shooting death of Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA). The arrest followed a 33-hour manhunt and was facilitated by Robinson’s own father, who recognized his son from images released by authorities and persuaded him to surrender.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, while Kirk was speaking at a TPUSA “Prove Me Wrong” event on the campus of Utah Valley University (UVU). Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while engaging in a debate with students. The shooting has sent shockwaves across the nation, highlighting the deep political divisions and the increasing prevalence of political violence.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced Robinson’s arrest, praising the suspect’s family for their cooperation. According to reports, Robinson confessed to his father, expressing a preference for suicide over surrendering to the authorities. Robinson’s father then contacted a youth pastor, who, in turn, alerted the U.S. Marshals, leading to Robinson’s arrest.
Investigators stated that Robinson was wearing clothing similar to that seen on surveillance footage from the day of the shooting. They also uncovered messages on the Discord app where Robinson discussed retrieving a rifle from a “drop point.” The FBI recovered a Mauser .30-06 bolt action rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, in a wooded area near the UVU campus. Inscriptions, including “hey fascist! CATCH!” and “O Bella ciao, Bella ciao,” were found engraved on casings recovered with the rifle.
Robinson is expected to face charges of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm. Utah officials have indicated they will seek the death penalty.
Charlie Kirk was a significant figure in American conservative politics. He co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, an organization that aims to promote conservative values on college and high school campuses. TPUSA has grown into a major force in the conservative movement, claiming a presence on over 3,500 campuses and hosting numerous events and conferences.
Kirk was known for his strong support of Donald Trump and his “America First” agenda. He held staunchly conservative views on issues such as gun rights, abortion, and LGBTQ+ rights. His views often sparked controversy and drew both passionate supporters and fierce critics.
In the wake of her husband’s tragic death, Erika Kirk delivered a tearful public address that resonated with many. Standing beside her husband’s empty chair, which he used during podcast tapings, she expressed profound gratitude to first responders for their efforts to save him. Throughout her speech, she spoke of Charlie’s love for their children and his unwavering support for President Trump, emphasizing his commitment to conservative values.
Erika pledged that Charlie’s voice would continue to be heard, stating, “My husband’s voice will remain.” She addressed the “evil-doers” responsible for his murder, promising that their actions would ignite a fire within her and inspire a powerful movement. She also comforted her young children, assuring them that their father was “on a work trip with Jesus,” demonstrating her strength amid unimaginable grief.
The news of Kirk’s death has elicited strong reactions from across the political spectrum. Supporters have hailed him as a “martyr” and a champion of conservative values. Critics, while condemning the violence, have pointed to Kirk’s divisive rhetoric and controversial views.
President Trump has expressed his condolences and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast. Vice President JD Vance traveled to Utah to accompany Kirk’s casket back to Arizona.
The shooting has raised concerns about political polarization and violence in the United States. It has also prompted discussions about security measures at public events and the safety of political figures.
