In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into Zimbabwe’s largest cash robbery, two brothers have been arrested in South Africa in connection with the $4 million Ecobank heist that occurred in Bulawayo on October 3, 2024. The suspects, Abraham Temayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu, were taken into custody on July 5, 2025, just days after charges against two other suspects were dropped, causing public confusion regarding the case.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrests in an official statement, indicating that extradition procedures are underway to bring the Vumbunu brothers back to Zimbabwe to face justice. This heist sent shockwaves through the financial community, marking one of the most brazen robberies in the nation’s history.

The police have emphasized that the investigation remains active, with efforts ongoing to track down additional suspects linked to the case. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still pursuing the arrest of the other suspects who are connected to this case,” stated Commissioner Paul Nyathi, urging caution among the media and the public while new leads are being followed.

The timing of the brothers’ arrest raises questions, especially as just 48 hours prior, the National Prosecuting Authority withdrew robbery charges against two men initially linked to the heist. This included Sibonginkosi Sibanda, a security guard whose charges were changed to money laundering after authorities found no credible link to the robbery. His defense attorney claimed that the state altered the charges in an attempt to save face as the case began to unravel.

Court documents revealed that Sibanda owned multiple properties and vehicles inconsistent with his income, including several houses and a truck, which led investigators to probe the source of his wealth. Prosecutor Constance Ncube mentioned that financial audits are ongoing to determine the origins of these funds.

The arrest of the Vumbunu brothers has reignited public interest in the case, especially regarding how they may have been involved in the meticulously planned robbery, which allegedly took place in under three minutes. As investigators continue to piece together the details of this high-profile crime, the authorities remain committed to ensuring that all individuals involved are brought to justice.

As the situation develops, both law enforcement and the public are eager for answers about the Vumbunu brothers’ roles in this audacious heist and what further revelations may emerge from the ongoing investigation.
