Yesterday, August 15, 2025, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin convened for a highly anticipated summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. This marks their first face-to-face meeting since Trump’s return to office and the first such summit between the two leaders since 2019. The primary focus of the meeting is to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and explore potential paths toward a ceasefire.
The meeting takes place against a backdrop of escalating tensions and a complex geopolitical landscape. While Trump has expressed his desire to broker a peace deal, significant differences remain between Russia and Ukraine regarding acceptable terms. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was not invited to the summit, has stated his opposition to surrendering any territory to Russia.
The choice of Anchorage, Alaska, as the summit location is symbolic, given Alaska’s history with both the United States and Russia. As the meeting is on American soil, the Secret Service has greater flexibility in managing security arrangements. However, both sides are adhering to a “gun for gun” approach, ensuring that equal security measures are in place for both leaders.
Accompanying Trump are Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff, along with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and chief of staff Susie Wiles. Putin’s delegation includes Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Special Presidential Envoy on Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Kirill Dmitriev.
Trump has characterized the meeting as a “feel-out” conversation, aimed at understanding Putin’s objectives and determining whether a ceasefire is possible. He has also warned of “very severe consequences” for Russia if Putin does not agree to end the war. While Trump has stated that he will not negotiate for Ukraine, he hopes to bring both sides to the table for future discussions, potentially including a second summit with Zelensky.
Zelensky has urged Trump to use the summit to convince Russia to halt its invasion and emphasized that “the necessary steps must be taken by Russia.” However, concerns remain that Trump might prioritize a deal that could compromise Ukraine’s interests.
The summit presents an opportunity for Trump to demonstrate his deal-making abilities and potentially achieve a breakthrough in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. For Putin, the meeting is a chance to showcase Russia’s return to the global stage and negotiate a deal that secures its gains in Ukraine.
However, significant challenges remain, and the outcome of the summit is uncertain. Trump has indicated that he will quickly assess whether the meeting is productive and is prepared to “walk away” if necessary. The coming hours and days will reveal whether this high-stakes encounter can pave the way for a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
