Elon Musk Launches “America Party” Amidst Escalating Feud with Trump

Billionaire Elon Musk has officially announced the formation of a new political party in the United States, named the “America Party,” marking a direct challenge to the country’s entrenched Republican-Democrat duopoly. The announcement, made via Musk’s social media platform X, follows weeks of escalating tensions and a public falling out with former ally, President Donald Trump.

Musk’s decision to create a third party stems from his strong opposition to Trump’s recently signed “big, beautiful” tax-cut and spending bill, which he argues will “bankrupt America.” “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk declared on Saturday, referencing a poll he conducted on X where he asked his followers if a new U.S. political party should be created. Over 65% of the more than 1.2 million respondents voted “yes.” “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” he added.

While the specific policies and core tenets of the America Party remain largely open for discussion, Musk has hinted at a potential strategy for gaining independence from the two-party system. He suggested that he might “laser-focus on just two or three Senate seats and eight to 10 House districts” for his party. “Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people,” Musk elaborated.

Musk has yet to share an actual policy platform for his party, but he has reposted and responded affirmatively to some of his X followers’ posts about what the platform could be. What appears to be on the docket is a platform that prioritizes cuts on debt and excess spending within the government, similar to what Musk pushed for during his time in the White House.

One of Musk’s followers asked: “Is this the America Party platform?” They went on to list several stances, including reducing debt, responsible spending, modernizing military with AI and robotics, pro-tech initiatives, less regulation, free speech, pro-natalist policies, and centrist policies. In response, Musk said “yeah!” and went on to repost the list to his millions of followers, but stopped short of providing his own official policy plan.

Musk’s announcement comes after a significant shift in his political affiliations. Although he had voted Democrat previously, he played a vital role for the Republican Party when he became the largest donor of the 2024 presidential race, predominantly funding Trump’s campaign but also financially backing other Republicans via his super political action committee titled America PAC. Following Donald Trump’s 2024 victory, Musk was appointed to co-run a new temporary government organization popularly known as the Department of Government Efficiency, serving until May 2025, when Musk departed from the department.

However, Musk’s relationship with Trump soured, especially after he took a public stance against the spending bill. Going a step further in early June, Musk said the “massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination” and told his millions of followers to “call your Senator, call your Congressman… kill the bill!”

The feud between the two has escalated, with Trump even hinting at potentially deporting Musk, who has U.S. and South African citizenship. “We might have to put DOGE on Elon. The monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn’t that be terrible?” Trump said, appearing to refer to the contracts and subsidies that Musk’s prominent businesses have from the federal government.

Despite Musk’s wealth and influence, the America Party faces significant challenges in gaining traction within the U.S. political system. Third parties in the USA face a number of significant obstacles, including the electoral system, federal campaign finance laws, and state ballot access laws. Two major parties—Democratic and Republican—have dominated U.S. politics, and no third party in recent memory has been able to penetrate the two-party system in a meaningful way.

Experts note that it is financially and legally difficult to create a new party, and voters and candidates are often hesitant to join. The U.S.’ “winner takes all” system in the Electoral College also makes it difficult for third-party candidates to gain ground. Furthermore, third parties often struggle with limited resources, reduced media coverage, and ballot access challenges.

As Elon Musk embarks on this ambitious political endeavor, the success of the America Party remains to be seen. While the challenges are steep, Musk’s resources, influence, and unconventional approach could potentially disrupt the existing political landscape. Whether the America Party can overcome the historical hurdles faced by third parties and carve out a meaningful role in American politics will be a closely watched development in the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections and beyond.
