Russia Given 50 Days to End Ukraine War

U.S. President Donald Trump has told Russia to end the war in Ukraine within 50 days. If not, Russia will face major new economic sanctions. Trump announced this plan, along with new support for Ukraine, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump said he was “very, very unhappy” with Russia. He stated that his patience with President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to end the conflict has run out.
Trump said that if a deal isn’t made in 50 days, the U.S. will put “very severe tariffs” on Russia. These tariffs could be as high as 100%. He also plans “secondary tariffs” that would target countries that still trade with Russia. This would make it harder for Russia to do business with anyone.
Russia’s main trading partners include China, India, and Turkey. These secondary tariffs are designed to pressure those countries to cut ties with Russia.
Trump and Rutte also announced a deal to send more weapons to Ukraine. NATO will buy these weapons, including Patriot anti-missile systems, from the United States. Then, NATO will send them to Ukraine.
Rutte said that this deal would provide “massive numbers” of weapons to Ukraine. Germany, Canada, and other countries are helping to pay for these weapons.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Trump for the new arms deal. He said he was grateful for the support. However, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that 50 days was too long to wait for a deal. She pointed out that innocent people are dying every day.
Some U.S. senators praised Trump’s move. They believe that tariffs on countries that support Russia could help end the war.
Trump had tried to improve relations with Putin earlier in his term. He had promised to end the Ukraine war quickly. However, he has become increasingly frustrated with Putin as the war has continued.
Recently, Russia has increased its attacks on Ukraine. Trump mentioned that his wife, Melania, helped him see Putin differently. He also referred to Putin as a “tough guy.”
The war in Ukraine has caused many deaths and injuries. Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes.
